The winter of 2013 marked four years since the depths of the Great Recession and the steepest bear market most of us ever saw.  Some aspects of the economy had improved, others had deteriorated, and the longer-term challenges the nation faced had only grown.  Yet in spite of these concerns, financial assets did well and rewarded investors with the patience to weather market volatility.
