Member Profile

William (Bill) R. Schutt is the founder and CEO of MATCOR, Inc., headquartered in Doylestown, PA.   MATCOR designs and installs corrosion prevention systems and technology that protect infrastructure, assets, and investment worldwide.

The Challenge

Over the last few years, Bill found himself feeling pulled in too many directions, balancing a hectic travel schedule with managing MATCOR’s operations. He decided to create a new President position and hire someone who could manage the day-to-day affairs of the company and continue to lead its growth trajectory. This new hire would also provide an opportunity for Bill to move into a role as Chairman, through which he would have more time to devote to MATCOR’s long-term strategic objectives.  Bill recognized that adding such a high-profile position to the company can be challenging and he wanted to get the perspective of others who were facing similar situations.

The Solution

Bill sent a message through the Center for Private Company Excellence member forum and immediately received responses from three members who are CEOs and have been in the position of creating the President position in their companies.  Bill met with two of the members in person and the third by phone, and asked them questions such as, “What did you learn through the experience?”, “What would you have done differently?” and “What do you know now that you wish you would have known then?”  The discussions helped Bill approach the interview process with a fresh perspective.  He also made some minor changes to the responsibilities of the role.

The Outcome

Bill found an outstanding President, and he has been pleased with the new President’s progress since he joined MATCOR. Hiring a new President allowed Bill to assume the Chairman role and travel more frequently to evaluate potential opportunities in new and existing markets. He felt confident in the knowledge that he hired a President capable of leading the company’s operations and continuing on the path toward future growth.  The bottom line for Bill? “Being able to network with others who had previously faced a similar situation was invaluable.  And I would not have had that opportunity were it not for my membership in the Center for Private Company Excellence.”
