Caran is a Director in Kreischer Miller's Tax Strategies group. She has 30 years of experience advising mid to large sized, multistate, and international C and S corporations, as well as real estate partnerships. Her industry focus spans manufacturing, distribution, trucking, and telecommunications equipment manufacturing and repair. In her work with S corporations, she serves complex, multi-generational family-owned businesses—coordinating individual, trust, private foundations, public charities, and gift tax filings across entire family groups.
Caran’s corporate and partnership tax expertise includes structuring and compliance for self-rental real estate entities, company director partnership interests, and Section 754 elections in connection with partnership interest transfers. She frequently guides clients through research and development (R&D) and cost segregation studies. She also advises on business interest expense limitations (IRC §163(j)), including interest tracing for debt financed distributions.
A trusted resource on entity transitions, Caran has led the conversion of two large S corporations to C corporations and managed their related tax provision work. On the international front, she consulted on an IRS audit project involving Form 5471 filings, the §965 transition tax, and subsequent GILTI computations. Following IRS review of the GILTI calculations provided, the Service determined not to audit later year computations.
