As a rising junior at Bentley University in Waltham, MA, and as an accounting major, my goal is to complete 150 credits during my undergraduate degree and then to earn my CPA. I began looking into summer internships, and came across Kreischer Miller on LinkedIn. I had never heard of the firm before, but after doing some research, it seemed like a great firm to work for. I also found out that it was right around the corner from my house, which is a plus! I decided to apply, and the recruiting team reached out to me to set up an interview a few weeks later.

After speaking with MaKayla, Kreischer Miller’s Talent Acquisition Specialist, I immediately felt like Kreischer Miller was the right fit for me. She was extremely nice and the interview felt very conversational. I remember MaKayla mentioned how positive and welcoming the workplace culture was and that has proven to be true.

On our first day in the office, we had a welcome reception in which the interns were greeted by several Kreischer Miller employees, all eager to get to know each of us. Since then, I have continued to connect with many of my coworkers through collaborating on projects, going out to lunch, and day-to-day interactions in the office. Being able to form such strong relationships with people at the firm has been a great part of the internship experience because I have gotten to know people on a personal level while also gaining valuable insight into their careers and the kind of work they do.

Throughout my internship at Kreischer Miller, I have gained real-world accounting knowledge and experience by working on several clients in a variety of industries. I mostly worked on employee benefit plan audits, which I really enjoyed because I learned a lot about different types of retirement plans and how they operate within different companies. Additionally, I became proficient in Excel because it is used for most of the testing we do for audits.

One of my favorite parts about the internship was getting to visit the offices of clients that I had audited. This was an excellent experience because it gave me the opportunity to interact and form relationships with the clients I was working on and experience different work environments.

Overall, I have had a really positive experience at Kreischer Miller and I have learned a lot throughout my internship. A piece of advice I’d like to give to anyone currently looking for an internship is to make sure to look for firms that really prioritize and care about their people. For me, that has been a really important factor because I not only enjoy my work, but I also really enjoy the people I’m working with.

Here are a few highlights from my internship:

Caitlin Burmester is an audit intern for Kreischer Miller’s 2023 summer internship program. She is a rising junior at Bentley University majoring in accounting. In her free time, she loves to run and is a member of the cross country and track teams at Bentley.
